The Local Boundary Commission has issued its final report and revealed some surprise ward boundary changes that didn’t appear in the previous proposals.
Cheadle & Gatley changes name to Cheadle West and Gatley and sees four changes.
By far the biggest change is that the area covering Styal Road – and the side-roads – between Yew Tree Grove and Hollyhedge Road moves into Heald Green. This has come as a surprise, and means some people will find themselves in Heald Green ward when they’re just a couple of minutes walk from Gatley village centre. The change was proposed by the Conservatives, but without any consultation with local residents.
Some houses at the end of Brookfield Road move into the new Cheadle West & Gatley ward, while the small new estate covering Whitworth and Belfry (off Wool Lane) moves into the new Cheadle East and Cheadle Hulme North ward. Some properties on Stockport Road, by Jubilee Park, also move into Cheadle West & Gatley.
The biggest change in Stockport is to Cheadle Hulme North ward, which becomes Cheadle East and Cheadle Hulme North. Residents in the south of the ward find themselves moved into Cheadle Hulme South while a large chunk of Cheadle Heath and Adswood gets added to Cheadle East and Cheadle Hulme North.
The changes have no effect for the elections on May 5th 2022, which will be held on the current ward boundaries.
In 2023, every seat in Stockport will be up for election on the new ward boundaries, with all 63 councillors being elected in one go, instead of the usual 21.
Here is the map showing the whole of Stockport, with thick lines showing the new boundaries and thin lines showing where existing boundaries are changing. You can see the full online map here.
Cllr Iain Roberts said “We will be looking at the new ward boundaries in detail. It’s very odd that houses a stone’s throw from Gatley village centre will find themselves in Heald Green, and I know many residents in Cheadle Hulme North did not feel proposals to add parts of Adswood and Cheadle Heath into their ward would be a good fit. The local councillors get no say in whether this change goes ahead: that decision rests with Parliament which will vote on it in the Autumn.”

cam we stop this boundary change i live on styal road and like being part of gatley
Hi John, as I understand it, the next stage is for MPs to vote on the changes in the Autumn. This is the final report and this change has been sprung on us right at the end. There was no hint of this proposal in the draft plans the Boundary Commission circulated. I am considering what we can do next, but it may be that your best chance is to lobby our MP, Mary Robinson, to take action.
It’s a disgrace. This is being done for the Tories election in 2024 so they can manipulate the votes for them. It’s not for the people of gatley. You and the other parties should vote against this.
Bec – this has nothing to do with the general election surely?
With any re-organization you cannot please everyone.
Sandra, it has everything to do with the GE. The Tories intend to move boundaries to disenfranchise many opposition voters in seats where they’re vulnerable – like ours. This is gerrymandering pure and simple and symptomatic of the banana republic this country has become under this appalling government
Alan – much of my general instinct is to blame the Tories for the ills in our society, but this isnt one of them. Moving people from Gatley to Heald Green wards has no effect on the General Election as both are in the same constituency. It does, however, potentially effect local council elections, potentially making the new Cheadle/Gatley ward a closer run thing (or, of course, potentially wider). Moving folk who are used to voting for “real” parties may well feel they are effectively disenfranchised in Heald Green where the Ratepayers always win with a massive majority and have done since, I think, 1929. Now, if the Lib Dems, Tories and Labour parties could get together and agree to field a single candidate in Heald Green, and urge all their supporters to vote for her/him, there”d be a decent chance of unseating the “independent” Ratepayer.

I live less than 5 minutes walk from Cheadle village. We are in Cheadle Hulme North. Our address is Cheadle. I would prefer to be in Cheadle Gatley.
Apart from voting, what other effects do the boundary changes have?
Thanks for the suggestion.
I have emailed Mary Robinson.
I STRONGLY OBJECT to the change of boundary.
GATLEY is my nearest village and I hardly ever go into Heald Green.
