The start of 2024 has been extremely challenging for many residents and businesses in Stockport due to heavy rainfall, snow, ice, and flooding. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to everyone affected. Thankfully, the forecast for the rest of the week looks drier, allowing us to focus on recovery efforts.
Your local councillors have been out every day, including New Year’s Day, meeting affected residents and directing Council officers to support those impacted by the flooding and will continue to offer guidance and help where needed.
We are aware of flooding on the following roads:
Beech Road, Borrowdale Avenue, Levens Close, Springfield, Alcester, Lawson Avenue, Foxlands, Wilmslow Road, Broadway, Broadway Avenue, Demmings Lane, Brookfield Road, Stonepail Cottages.
Flooding remains a complex issue involving multiple agencies, including the Environment Agency, United Utilities, and the council. Recent flooding has largely been due to the sheer volume of rainfall, overwhelming drainage systems already at capacity. Stockport experienced more than a month’s worth of rain in just 12 hours, significantly contributing to the problem.
To help assess the full extent of the damage, we urge residents to report any flooding if they haven’t already done so at Report a Flood so that a full picture can be built up.
Council teams are working to clear gullies, assist Greater Manchester Police with stranded vehicles, and remove obstructions to restore roads as quickly as possible. Investigations into the causes and impact of flooding are underway, and we understand that the initial findings will be released at the end of the month.
Thank you for your continued support.
