Tom Morrison MP and Lib Dem candidate Huma Khan

Local resident Huma Khan has been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Cheadle West and Gatley by-election on Thursday 17 October. With her unique background in law and education, Huma is well-positioned to bring fresh energy and new ideas to the local council, focusing on inclusivity, community representation, and environmental protection.

A Diverse Background in Law and Education
Huma holds a Law Degree, which provides her with a strong foundation in justice, fairness, and governance. After completing her studies, she pursued her passion for education, embarking on a successful career in teaching. Currently, Huma is an Assistant Principal as well as a Year 2 teacher at a school in Manchester. Her dual role in education has equipped her with leadership skills and a deep understanding of the challenges young people and families face in today’s world.

Passionate About Community Politics
Living locally, Huma has seen first-hand the importance of local governance in shaping vibrant and supportive communities. She is passionate about making politics more inclusive and accessible, breaking down barriers that often prevent people from engaging with political processes. Her commitment is to ensure that local politics is not just for the few, but truly representative of the diverse community in Cheadle West and Gatley.

By standing for the council, Huma is determined to address the real concerns of local residents. She is focused on making sure every voice is heard, and every person feels empowered to contribute to the future of the area.

Championing the Environment and Green Spaces
A lifelong advocate for environmental protection, Huma is particularly passionate about safeguarding green spaces and nature in Cheadle and Gatley. She recognises the value these areas bring to the quality of life, from improving mental well-being to promoting sustainability. Protecting the environment will be a key priority for her as a councillor, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the natural beauty of the local area.

Inspired by Tom Morrison and the Local Lib Dem Team
Huma’s decision to run for council was inspired by the work of Tom Morrison and the local Lib Dem team. She has seen the positive changes they have brought to the community, from championing local causes to delivering on promises. Their dedication to improving life in Cheadle and Gatley motivated Huma to step up and contribute to this important work.

“I’ve been inspired by the incredible work Tom and the Lib Dem team have done locally,” Huma says. “They’ve shown how real change can be achieved through dedication and community engagement, and I’m excited to continue that momentum.”

Best wishes, Huma. It’d be good to see a female councillor representing the ward again. Politics always seems to be still very much male dominated.

    • Huma Khan says:

Thank you, John. I would be thrilled to join the LD team and contribute to making a positive impact on our community.

  2. Chris T says:

Congratulations! May I ask, what specific skills and/or experience do you offer to convince us all to vote for you? Like any job, to be a success in the role we need to possess the appropriate, tangible skills and if I’m considering whether to vote for you I need to know who you are and what you have to offer the residents of Gatley. Thank you

    • John Hartley says:

Chris – doesnt Huma’s law degree and her work as an educator tick any boxes for you about the relevant skills she might bring to the council?

And I also note that she claims a commitment to environmental protection which I would have thought is of interest to many locals. Although I may possibly disagree with her on that score – I’m not as wedded to protecting the green belt as I am to building social housing (something I think local councillors may sometimes confuse with “affordable” housing. As the housing charity, Shelter, has it:

    • Huma says:

Thank you for the question Chris. The election campaign has very much kept me out delivering leaflets and knocking on doors!

My background in law and education as well as multiple leadership roles in my career give me a wealth of skills and experience that I hope to bring to the council.

I am an organised professional used to dealing with demanding, high-pressured and complex situations, whilst securing the best outcomes for others. I can manage a busy schedule of meetings, public events, and constituent requests.

I have very good communication and interpersonal skills. I can build strong relationships with fellow councillors, community members, and stakeholders. As a leader, I understand the importance of collaborating with other councillors, council staff, and external agencies to ensure we all work towards common goals.

I aspire to be a champion for fairness, and make local politics more accessible and responsive to people’s concerns. I welcome and respect diverse perspectives and backgrounds in the community which will allow me to show empathy toward constituent concerns.

I am passionate about effectively representing the community and fulfilling my responsibilities. I strive to be the best in everything that I do, as well as continuously improve and grow my skillset. I am deeply committed to making a meaningful impact and creating lasting, positive change – whether that is as a teacher, an assistant principal or a local councillor (if elected)!

      Hope that helps Chris!

  3. Chris T says:

    I take it that’s a ‘No’ then.
