Councillors call for straight talking over A34 corridor improvement works

by Lib Dem team on 27 August, 2023

Following calls from residents after confusing signs and letters some had received relating to A34 works Cllrs Morrison and Hunter followed up with the appropriate council officer to get to the bottom of what is happening and when. We can share that:

  1. A traffic regulation order is in place to cover three nights next week to be carried out on the A34 (southbound) and into Broadway from Tuesday 29th and Thursday 31st August between 10pm and 6am.
  2. During the overnight works Broadway will need to be closed in both directions at the junction with the A34. Diversions will be signed.
  3. Single lane closures will also be required on the A34 to ensure the works can be carried out safely and efficiently.
  4. These are preparatory works for the replacement of the subway linking Foxland Road with Broadway which forms part of the A34 improvement plan and currently does not have a scheduled date for construction (see 6. below).
  5. The 78 weeks referenced is a standard period for a traffic regulation order and is not an indication of the length of work
  6. Funding of the A34 corridor improvement plan is still to be signed off by central government and once it is detailed plans will be developed and consulted upon.

Details of the scheme can be found at https://www.stockport.gov.uk/a34-corridor-improvement-plan

Commenting on the situation Councillor Hunter said ‘The street signs and letters to residents are confusing. We need to go back to straight talking in our communications and I will be taking this up with officers’.

  1. Alan says:

Thanks to Ian Hunter for coming back to me on this so quickly.

  2. Karen Sandler says:

Thank you to Tom and Ian for this total and utter confusion on this.
Just a point to note. The signs at the end of Broadway going out and coming in are DIFFERENT.
The one going out onto Kingsway says 29th to 31st August. The one coming onto Broadway from Kingsway is for the next 3 working days.
Will we ever really find out what the Council intends to do?

  3. David Shonfield says:

The signs notifying when the roadworks are taking place are contradictory. The one on Broadway advises works begin 29th August for 3 nights whilst the one on Kingsway details works commencing 4th September for 3 nights. Which is correct and the hours the road will be closed as again the time on the signs are different.
