Snapshot – what your councillors have been up to

by Lib Dem team on 25 January, 2025

Five things we’ve been working on this week

  1. Scrutiny Meetings
At the recent Economy and Regeneration Scrutiny Committee meeting, key issues affecting our community were discussed.

–          Rents Charged by Stockport Homes
The committee examined the rent levels set by Stockport Homes, focusing on ensuring affordability for tenants.

–          Addressed New National Planning Regulations
We discussed the latest updates to national planning regulations and how they impact our community.

  1. Leafleting

We distributed leaflets to engage residents and raise awareness about local initiatives and community updates.

  1. Established Cheadle High Street with the Task Force
Through the High Street Task Force, we’re working to breathe new life into our local high street. This includes initiatives to attract footfall, support businesses, and create a vibrant, thriving environment for both residents and visitors. Let’s work together to bring out the best in Cheadle!
  2. Tackled Illegal Business Activity in Gatley
We followed up on concerns about unauthorised business operations at Church Road car park in Gatley. By investigating and addressing these issues, we aim to protect community spaces.
  3. Pushed for Enforcement at Belmont House
We’ve requested updates on enforcement actions at Belmont House on Schools Hill to ensure that compliance and local regulations are upheld.

Each of these actions reflects our commitment to addressing local concerns and driving positive change for our community!

  1. Alan says:

There should be greater scrutiny around some of these places opening on Cheadle High St. Most people seem to think they’re just money laundering exercises – opening briefly and then closing down just before their accounts are due – Cheshire Bun being a classic example.
As it is Cheadle is fast turning into Rusholme – and it’s it a good look

    • Mohammad says:

Alan, how do you know they are money laundering?

I do agree with greater scrutiny… like if there is a burger shop on the street we don’t need 5 more on the same 100m stretch…

The council has historically been required to follow a government-mandated set of criteria when assessing planning applications, leaving no scope for refusal based on usage. However, there is good news on this front: new legislation has been introduced that empowers councils to refuse planning applications for developments within walking distance of a school, making future approvals in such cases unlikely.

  2. Debra Swindells says:

Hi, Can the pot holes and sunken grids please be repaired on Cheadle High Street.
Driving down the High Street is not good for drivers and will be causing damage to cars.
    Thank you.

  3. Debra Swindells says:

    Hi again,
Can you please give residents assurance that the playing fields on Brookfield Road and Whitegates Road will not be built on.
Residents have concerns due to Labour’s plans to build on greenbelt land.
