Bollards to illegal parking

by Lib Dem team on 25 January, 2025

Following complaints from residents regarding cars parking on the double yellow lines opposite Costa on Elm Road new bollards have been installed to make it very difficult to do so.

At the same time they have requested enforcement action on the garage business operating on Church Road car park. At the same time they have been investigating a more rigorous way of deterring this operation and will be discussing making the car park a chargeable in-line with other car parks in the borough.

Parking fees for will be discussed at the Cheadle Area committee on Tuesday 28th January at Trinity Church, Massie Street, Methodist Church 7pm.

  1. Carole says:

Are you trying to kill off Gatley village like Cheadle village by making parking more and more difficult

    • Lee says:

To be fair I think its more of a road traffic safety issue, one that is subject of regular complaint rather than an obstructive measure. If people parked in a reasonable and safe manner there’d be no problem. Lazy drivers who can be bothered to park safe and walk I fear.

  2. Paul says:

Oh great, so a business illegally uses the only car park in the village, and the councils way of stopping this isn’t to punish the business, it’s to look at introducing parking charges. That won’t stop the business, he’ll simply pass the charges on and meanwhile the residents and legally operating businesses in gatley are punished.

  3. JB says:

I agree with Carole. There should be no discouragement to off-street parking.

  4. Chris says:

    I agree with Paul.

  5. Karen Sandler says:

I agree with you about the parking in Cheadle. But there is so much illegal and obstructive parking in Cheadle, which never seems to be policed. Cheadle village is in total gridlock because of all this.

  6. Mrs Mac says:

Why not have a maximum of a 2 hour stay on the car park and why are there no traffic wardens patrolling on a regular basis. The corner at Oakwood and Church Road is just awful, cars just blatantly park on the yellow lines outside Armenique right up to the corner, it’s an accident waiting to happen!

  7. Sajjad Akbar says:

The bollards are an absolute waste of public money and unlikely to stop persistent offenders. Earlier this afternoon, two cars were parked on either side causing an obstruction and creating even greater risk to motorists and pedestrians. It would be an absolute tragedy if the honest hard working gatley residents are penalised for the illegal business operating in church street carpark. The mechanic should be named and shamed and pursued by Stockport Borough Council and HMRC.

  8. Some background to these issues:
Double Yellow Lines in general, the Highway Code states :
The Highway Code advises drivers to avoid parking within 10 meters (32 feet) of a junction, or opposite it, unless in an authorized parking space. Parking at a junction can be dangerous because it can reduce visibility for pedestrians and other drivers.
Where drivers choose to ignore that advice the council can be obliged to apply Double Yellow Lines as a reinforcement of the Highway Code advice for the sake of safety.

The ‘car mechanic’ in the car park, this has been an open wound for some years now. I alone have received dozens of complaints. In the last two years we have explored a number of options, in a free to use car park I could not find an offence to report to the council. The police could not find evidence of an offence although they did have a SORN vehicle moved and investigated a car with reported cloned plates. HMRC are primarily interested in tax avoidance but I could not provide proof of any such crime. For all I know they are still investigating.

Moving from a Free to Use to Pay to Use Car Park will have a number of benefits, it will attract Enforcement Officers who will check for pay to park, will report any long term parking of vehicles such as SORN, abandoned, on clone plates (potentially used for crime), all of this should free up additional spaces. It will bring this car park into line with almost all other council car parks in Stockport.

Ultimately, this action is the result of residents demands for action at this car park and the frustration of having no other options in our arsenal.

  9. Des says:

Is there ever a time when a vehicle is not parked on the zig-zags of the pedestrian crossing in Gatley?
The wardens & police could be self-funding on this alone!

Also, the amount of double and on-kerb parking (evening) on both sides of the road, west of the Horse & Farrier.
