Cheadle MP Tom Morrison has voiced his deep disappointment and frustration at the Planning Inspector’s decision to allow 278 homes to be developed on land formerly used as Gatley Golf Course despite huge amounts of local opposition and Stockport Council refusing the plans last year.
“This is a devastating blow to our community and to the hundreds of residents who have fought tirelessly against these plans” said Tom Morrison. “This decision disregards the voices of local people and local democracy.”
The decision comes after the Labour Government’s recent changes to national planning policies, which almost doubled the number of homes required in Stockport.
Tom Morrison has pledged to work closely with local Liberal Democrat councillors in Cheadle West and Gatley to mitigate the impacts of the development. “We will do everything in our power to hold the developers accountable to ensure they address the community’s concerns about transport, and infrastructure, I’ll also be working to ensure the developers stay true regarding the promises they have made regarding community green spaces” Morrison added.
Tom Morrison and the Liberal Democrats remain committed to fighting for the preservation of green spaces across Cheadle and will continue to challenge policies that undermine local voices.

😄… Cannot help but chuckle – all those electors who were lured to vote/elect one party of the left, on the understanding that they would stop this, have been ‘lanced’ by the main party of the left… the one which receives few votes locally! 😂
Yet, in contrast, it was only yesterday the Manchester Evening News again reported on Stockport’s shameful record on house building. It noted (again) that the approx 8000 applicants for social housing have a 12 year wait. That’s families being forced to live in expensive, insecure and, often, very unsuitable private rented accommodation. Or forced to “camp out” with relatives or friends.
This new article notes that Stockport’s record for house building is the 28th worst in the country, with 265 areas performing better. The Lib Dems who now run the council, and Labour who previously ran it, should hand their heads in shame.
