Councillors Ian Hunter and Tom Morrison spoke to residents at the Gatley festival, seizing the opportunity to gather their opinions on the challenges faced by water companies. They conducted a survey, addressing the issues of underfunding leading to network leaks and sewage spillages, locally into the Mickerbrook.
The survey posed the question, “How should water companies pay for the repair of their network leaks?” The residents were presented with three options: 1. Cuts in profits, 2. Raising bills, and 3. Other. The outcome of the survey revealed an overwhelming preference for water companies to cover the expenses from their profits, with the “other” category yielding intriguing suggestions.
The results stood as follows:
– 89% voted for funding through profits.
– 11% selected the “other” option.
– 0% favoured raising bills.
The “other” category offered noteworthy suggestions, including nationalising water companies, assigning the task to the government with charges to the water companies, and bringing them under public ownership while halting overseas dividend payments.
Reflecting on the results, Cllr Ian Hunter expressed the urgency for action and pledged to continue advocating for change. Tom Morrison added that United Utilities’ recent apology was insufficient and emphasised the need for tangible and immediate steps to be taken.

On the subject of water, could the council clean out the top water drains, gullies, in the gatley area.
Over 50% of the top water drains between the tatton cinema and Kingsway junction have been completely blocked for over five years, I reported these five years ago and still have copies of the emails.
Also the top water drains on Old Hall road gatley clinic side are all completely blocked and have been so for in excess of five years.
This leads to lying water on the roads during rain and splashing by cars passing.
You will wait forever for this council and our councillors to do something about this and such issues. There is a constant flood outside my house it’s there today yesterday the whole road was flooded . Vote again for the LDS …..don’t think so.
We used to have the same problem outside our house, but noticed during last nights downpour that it has been sorted by the council. As ever, problems are always more visible than the many instances where action has been taken.
