Fact check – Car parking machines

by Lib Dem team on 30 April, 2023

We have seen leaflets being circulated by the Conservatives claiming that the Cheadle car parking machines no longer take cash, or will stop taking cash in the near future. This is untrue.

All Cheadle parking machines take both cash and mobile phone payments and there are no plans to phase out cash in the car parks.

    Good.
I also think there should be half an hour free parking to encourage local shopping or perhaps free parking after 4:30pm each day.

  2. We have been requesting free parking through the Lib Dem councillors for some years, and have been ignored. We requested 1 hour’s free parking. Gatley, Cheadle Hulme and all local areas have completely free parking. Why is Cheadle so penalised?
I drove through Cheadle Village this afternoon (Sunday) and could barely get through due to unbelievably awful parking, including blocking the whole bus stop outside Tesco.
So, instead of penalising shoppers, why not tackle this horrendous bottleneck?

I parked at peel centre last week, I was going to use the ring app but it was 1.50 for 2 hours as opposed to 1.00 by cash, surely that can’t be right ?

    • Lib Dem team says:

Hi Gary – the Peel Centre is a private car park – and one there have been numerous complaints about over the years. In council car parks, the cost for paying by app is the same as the cost for paying by cash.

  4. Judith Stone says:

Cheadle is free on Sunday so that’s no excuse for bad parking. However the new prices won’t encourage anyone during the day

  5. Sue Williams says:

How much more money can Stockport Council screw out of it’s residents? 60p for 2hours parking, that is a 50% increase on the minimum parking charge! Absolutely disgusting. I would have thought that the council would have wanted to encourage people to visit Cheadle to support the few shops that are left. The way things are going there will be nothing left on the high street apart from the ‘Parklet’ which was a complete waste of money, regardless of who paid for it.

  6. D J Milton says:

60p for 2 hours is peanuts. I was in Mumbles Swansea last weekend where it is £4.50 for 2 hours. I’ve paid £5 for ONE hour in some car parks in Yorkshire!

  7. Robert Cohen says:

I have shopped/used the Peel Centre for probably 10 years due to the rip-off parking costs and a bad experience getting a fine whilst getting change to pay! The Dumplington Shopping (Trafford) Centre offers free parking.

The council will constantly look for ways to increase its revenue as it spends money it raises with little concern for value – hence, for example, the awful work done on re-paving cheadle a few years and which is now more or less in the same condition as it was before!

I don’t mind paying to park. 60p for 2 hours is fine, but sometimes the ticket machines in Massie Street are very difficult to use, actually difficult to get them to accept cash. Maybe not being maintained properly?

  9. Sandra Butler says:

Mike’s idea seems a reasonable suggestion – free parking for 30 minutes.

  10. Jennifer says:

Robert, I presume you mean you have NOT shopped at the Peel Centre………..Many of these ideas are really good, but who is going to enforce them?

  11. Robert Cohen says:

Apologies for typos. I have NOT parked there. Which implies I don’t shop there.

  12. I have stopped shopping in Cheadle because of the cost of parking. Sometimes I wait for a Sunday to park free. Come Councillors do something about it!!!
