Still time to support Tom’s campaign against sewer dumping in our local rivers

Has anyone seen sewage in the Micker Brook? I haven’t yet. Where is sewage released in Cheadle? And when.?
There are two sofas dumped in the brook near where children jump in – near the old chimney.

Washing machine outlet and other household drains are being empted into our local waterways. At the weekend in particular grey detergent stained water can be seen flowing from the Radnormere estate through the golf course. Goodness knows how many “Saniflow” toilets end up in our rivers and streams.

Many years ago as a kid in 1976 drought we walked up very low Micker Brook pretty much from Red Rocks to almost the source. Under the bridge at Cheadle (on Gatley Road) there was an overflow with a metal flap on it. As we walked under the bridge a load of, lets put it, “solids” and associated stuff came gushing out. Wonder if that was ever fixed…

Certainly stopped me from ever going in the water downstream at the weir or at the waterfall ever again.

These are actually releases by UU , on a grand scale. More evidence of the failure of privatisation. Companies prioritise dividends and high executive pay over maintenance which has been ignored for years and with a toothless watchdog, this is what happens. We need a change of government from this hapless bunch of chancers.

Hi Alan, doubt privatisation is anything to do with polluting waterways; they did it before and they will continue to do it in future – until and unless the fines are higher and enforced more frequently

  5. John Hartley says:

Speaking of the failures of privatisation, it was only a few days ago that the BBC was reporting on water compnaies introducing hosepipe bans. It commented that most of the companies are failing in their targets to reduce water leaks and that is a significant factor in dealing with the current water shortage.

Time to take these vital public services back into community ownership, IMO – but you’ll struggle to find any political party with the bottle to say that. Even Labour has just dropped that as a policy.

  6. Wendy Rowley says:

A couple of weeks ago whilst walking over the Gatley Road bridge across Micker Brook, I noticed a most appalling stench of effluent. It must have been dreadful for the residents of Riversdale Rd and Wensley Rd. So Mike, I suspect the overflow that created such an impression on you all those years ago is still very much operational and emphasises the need for this campaign, although I am afraid I have little optimism that it will succeed.
